Coronavirus / COVID-19 Update

Coronavirus / COVID-19 Update

1400 JST - Wednesday, 28 September 2022

The Japanese government has confirmed that from Tuesday, 11 October 2022,  short-term visitors from all 68 countries previously eligible for a visa waiver will once again be permitted visa-free entry to Japan. Inbound arrivals will need either to be vaccinated three times with a WHO-approved vaccine or submit a pre-arrival negative result for a Covid-19 test, taken 72 hours before departure.

We are delighted at the impending resumption of fully independent visa-free travel, and look forward to welcoming you to Japan.

1200 JST - Friday, 23 September 2022

The Japanese government has announced that from Tuesday, 11 October 2022, visa-free entry for most short-term visitors will be permitted, subject to certain conditions. These conditions have yet to be made fully public but prior to the pandemic, Japan allowed visa-free entry for short-term visitors from 68 countries. It is also expected that, in line with current policy, inbound arrivals will need either to be vaccinated three times or submit a pre-arrival negative result for a Covid-19 test.

We are delighted at the prospect of the resumption of fully independent visa-free travel, and look forward to welcoming you to Japan.

1300 JST - Monday, 5 September 2022

From September 7, 2022, Japan will accept applications for tourist visas from travellers joining both guided and self-guided package tours.

Due to unprecedented demand, obtaining a visa is currently a lengthy process for many customers.  Accordingly, we have made the decision to fully restart self-guided tours from Tuesday, 1 November, 2022. All customers with self-guided tour bookings prior to this date are invited to either rebook or accept a full refund.

Customers booked on self-guided tours due to start on or after Tuesday, 1 November, 2022, as well as all guided tour customers, should, if they have not already done so, contact their local Japanese embassy or consulate to confirm visa processing times. Walk Japan's affiliate The Japan Travel Company (JTC) is a Japanese-registered and licensed travel company. Through JTC we are able to provide Walk Japan customers who have completed our online manifest form with the "certificate for completion of Registration to the ERFS system" and the further information necessary for a visa application.

Please note that we are unable to offer any assistance with visa applications for independent travel. We continue to monitor the situation, and are hopeful that restrictions preventing fully independent visa-free travel to Japan will not remain in place for too much longer.

0900 JST - Thursday, 1 September 2022

The Japanese Government has announced that from Wednesday, 7 September 2022, the requirement for guide accompaniment from arrival in Japan until departure from Japan will be discontinued.

Full details of the revised conditions of entry to Japan for the purposes of tourism have yet to be made public. Although it is unlikely that fully independent travel will be possible for some time, we are confident that it will soon be much easier for customers to join our tours.

We very much look forward to restarting our scheduled guided and self-guided tours and welcoming you to Japan.

0900 JST - Thursday, 25 August 2022

The Japanese Government has announced that from Wednesday, 7 September, 2022, inbound travellers who have received three doses of a recognised Covid-19 vaccine will be exempt from the requirement to take a PCR test prior to departure for Japan.

Japanese media outlets, including the nation's public broadcaster NHK, have also reported that further relaxation of restrictions on inbound travel is imminent, but this has yet to be confirmed by the Japanese Government. The current restrictive guidelines remain in place. That is, only participants on package tours accompanied by a guide from arrival in Japan until departure from Japan are currently able to apply for a tourist visa. Please see our previous 18 August update for more details on how this affects Walk Japan tours.

We continue to monitor the situation, and are hopeful that restrictions impeding travel to Japan will not remain in place for too much longer.

1700 JST - Thursday, 18 August 2022

Most unfortunately, the Japanese Government’s restrictive guidelines for the staged resumption of inbound travel to Japan remain in place. That is, only participants on package tours accompanied by a guide from arrival in Japan until departure from Japan are able to apply for a tourist visa.

As such, currently we are welcoming customers on private guided tours and scheduled guided tours, where practical to do so.  For more on the latter please see below. However, we are unable to offer self-guided tours or any assistance with visa applications for independent travel with pre-arranged itineraries or accommodation.

Given this situation, sadly we have had to cancel all self-guided tours for non-residents of Japan scheduled to start on or before Monday 17 October 2022. Our Customer Service team is in the process of contacting all customers affected by these cancellations to discuss available options.

The unique requirement of guide accompaniment from arrival airport to departure airport inevitably also presents organisational and logistical problems for many of our scheduled guided tours. We also know that most tour participants combine their Walk Japan tour with at least some independent travel in Japan, an option that is not possible under current regulations.

Consequently, we are reviewing how we can best operate each of our September and October 2022 scheduled guided tours, and contacting customers accordingly. There is growing pressure from the travel industry and business organisations while local media reports are highlighting the problems and poor results within the current regulatory framework.

We continually monitor the situation, and are hopeful that restrictions impeding travel to Japan will not remain in place for too much longer. While we anticipate further relaxation of the regulations, the Japanese government has yet to indicate when this will be.

1400 JST - Wednesday, 8 June 2022

The latest guidelines for the staged resumption of inbound travel to Japan have been released. From Friday, 10 June 2022, only participants on package tours will be permitted to apply for a tourist visa to enter Japan.

The most important points are as follows:

- Entry to Japan for tourism purposes will be restricted to those who have only been in the countries in Japan's "Group Blue" in the 14 days prior to visiting Japan. They must also provide a certificate showing a negative PCR test result for COVID-19 conducted within 72 hours of departure for Japan.

- Upon arrival, there is no requirement to take a further PCR test, nor to undergo quarantine.

- Tour participants must be accompanied by a guide from arrival in Japan until departure from Japan i.e. from arrival airport to departure airport. This means that under these guidelines, self-guided tours for non-Japan residents are not possible. Anyone who wishes to join a tour must ensure that their international flights fit closely with the tour start and end dates.

We will be delighted to welcome customers on private tours during the summer months. Please contact us to discuss possibilities.

Walk Japan's affiliate The Japan Travel Company (JTC) is a Japanese-registered and licensed travel company. Through JTC we are able to provide Walk Japan customers who have completed our online manifest form with the "certificate for completion of Registration to the ERFS system" and the itinerary details necessary for a visa application. Please note that the Japanese Government typically requires that customers apply for their own visas themselves at their local embassy or consulate, and that we cannot do this on anyone's behalf.

We anticipate further relaxation of the guidelines sooner rather than later, and in time for our tours in September. We will provide updates as and when new information is forthcoming.

Revised booking conditions

To help reduce any worries surrounding Covid-19 and make it easier to book tours with us we have temporarily revised our booking conditions.

We have relaxed conditions 13 and 14 to offer more flexibility when cancelling a tour booking and to make it easier to transfer to another tour.

For further details please see the booking conditions or contact us.

Disclaimer:

The following information is drawn from official Japanese government announcements, informal government sources, Japanese media reports, and testing the visa system with enquiries ourselves. Government policy formulation is seemingly ongoing and the following information should not be relied upon. In all circumstances, please confirm with the appropriate Japanese authority.

********************
We  currently understand that all people wishing to travel to Japan for tourism purposes after Friday, 10 June 2022 will require a visa until further notice. Please note that the Japanese Government requires that customers apply for their own visas through their local embassy or consulate, and that we cannot do this on anyone else's behalf.

Once a visa is granted, customers will be able to enter Japan and join their Walk Japan tour. There are some further procedures necessary prior to departure, the most important of which is the submission of a certificate showing a negative PCR test result for COVID-19 conducted within 72 hours of departure for Japan. However, arrival in Japan is now much more straightforward. For example, passengers who have only been in the 98 countries in Japan's "Group Blue" in the 14 days prior to visiting Japan will not have to take a PCR test on arrival, nor will they have to undergo quarantine.

The current information available suggests that most visitors will be granted a visa for a stay of up to 90 days, and no mention is made of pre or post-tour activities. We expect more comprehensive information to become available over the coming days and weeks, and we will update this notice accordingly.

1100 JST - Monday, 9 March 2020

As the most recent Japan travel advisories from the United States and Australian Governments remain in place, Walk Japan is now accepting penalty-free transfers to a later departure date for any of our customers booked to join one of our tours that is scheduled to start on or before Monday, 6 April 2020. A transfer, which is subject to availability and payment of any outstanding balance prior to the start date of the new tour chosen, will be valid for rebooking on departures starting on or before Wednesday, 30 June 2021.

Unless government advisories or other considerations otherwise preclude us from doing so, we will continue running all Walk Japan tours as scheduled, and therefore require a decision from customers regarding participation, transfer or cancellation, at least 15 calendar days prior to the tour start date. Please note that in the case of transfer, it is not necessary to immediately decide on a new tour date - a credit memo for funds already received will be placed on customer records for future use.

We have also temporarily amended our Booking Conditions as follows:

- Balance payments are due 15 calendar days (previously, one calendar month) before the Tour Start Date.

- Customer cancellations up to and including 15 calendar days (previously, one calendar month) before the Tour Start Date will incur a charge of 25% of the total invoice amount (the non-refundable deposit).

All other Booking Conditions, including penalties for customer cancellations made 14 calendar days or less prior to the Tour Start Date, remain unchanged.

Unless there is any material change in the above travel advisories we will be extending both the transfer eligibility period and amended Booking Conditions every Tuesday for an additional seven days on a rolling basis.

We continue to monitor the situation and will make updates accordingly.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to do so.

Customers from Singapore and Hong Kong

Due to heightened travel advisories from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and increased restrictions placed by the Government of Japan on inbound travellers from Hong Kong, customers from both territories are advised to contact us to discuss options for transfer or cancellation.

Further to the most recent Japan travel advisories from the United States and Australian Governments, Walk Japan will now accept transfers to a later departure date for any of our customers booked to join one of our tours that is scheduled to start between Tuesday, 25 February and Monday, 23 March 2020. A transfer, which is subject to availability and payment of balance of funds, will be valid for departures starting on or before Wednesday, 30 June 2021.

Soon, we will directly contact all customers who are due to join our tours between Tuesday, 25 February and Monday, 23 March 2020. Please note that unless government advisories or other considerations otherwise preclude us from doing so, we will continue running all tours as scheduled.

We continually monitor the situation and will make updates accordingly. Unless there is any material change we will be providing a further update on Monday, 2 March 2020 for customers scheduled to join tours starting after this period. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to do so.
